The Foundry in Birkenhead is a building steeped in engineering history. Used for much of the 19th century by “father of the British steam crane” James Taylor and inventor of the Cochran boiler Edward Compton, the first ever submarine “Resurgam” was built here and successfully launched on its first trial trip from the nearby Alfred Dock in 1879. In adapting the building for contemporary and future use, its proud heritage is brought to the fore and celebrated in our design.
“This project has exceeded my expectations. The character of the building has been retained and the original features have been tactfully celebrated, whilst providing a pleasant modern workplace.”
